The legend of Gnocchi tells us that they were born

in the Campania region when one day a priest

came to the abbey at noon, which was very gluttony for gnocchi,

the nickname of the dumplings “strangulaprievite,”

which in translation from Neapolitan means to “strangle a priest.”

But there is also another theory that appears even further,

in ancient Greece. The word “strangulaprievite.”

is an actually two-word content “strangulos” and “preptos,”

which translated from Greek means – round body.

the famous and delicious Gnocchi of Sorento,

which are cooked in all restaurants all over the world!


Gnocchi Sorrento style is a typical traditional dish

from the Campania region. They come from Sorrento,

where they also bear their name. Gnocchi Sorrento style

has many ancient roots. A rich but delicious dish which

at the same time has a cherished content.

The creation of Sorrento’s dumplings came from 1600 in

old meth located in Tasso Square. Gnocchi’s Sorrento style

was created with very ordinary ingredients.

They are made with potato dumplings or dumplings of flour and water,

cooked and seasoned with tomato sauce,

flavored with “fior di latte” or mozzarella,

and sprinkled with Parmigiano Reggiano and basil,

all baked for a few minutes in the oven

until well toasted and crispy on the top.

Necessary Ingredients for 5 servings:  

500 ml tomato sauce,

500g gnocchi

250 g mozzarella

70g Grated  Parmesan

Fresh basil

Method of preparation:

While the sauce is boiling,

Easy Homemade Italian Gnocchi recipe without potatoes

If you choose mozzarella for your Gnocchi Sorrento style,

then it must be well squeezed before

using it for the dish; otherwise, the gnocchi will become more liquid.

You can remove the mozzarella from the water

a day or two before using it.


Then boil the gnocchi in salted water.

As soon as they get afloat, they are ready to be drained.

In a baking pan or casserole – or better in a glen pan,

put the gnocchi and some of the tomato sauce,

mix them gently.



Then add the rest of the tomato sauce.

Add some of the mozzarella cut into small pieces,

and mix well again.



Sprinkle with the grated Parmesan

and add the rest of the mozzarella

and basil leaves, chopped into small pieces.


At the cover, the Gnocchi Sorrento style

with a fine stream of olive oil. As they say in Italian,

“un filo d’olio di olive.”


Bake the Gnocchi Sorrento style

in a preheated oven at 200°C for 10 minutes.
